Kenyans eager for Astrazeneca Vaccine: Covid-19

Initially, the vaccine against Covid-19 was to be given to people who were much exposed to the virus. These were all who worked as health workers and teachers above 50 years of age.

Right now, almost everybody is going for it. Teachers who have not reached 50 can’t wait any longer. They feel that they also need the vaccine. Some teachers and doctors have died of the virus and so people don’t want to take chances.

The old who were not among the categories mentioned for first priority have also raised their concern. The government has agreed to include them in the list for the first phase of vaccination.

This has made the queues unbearable. In some Covid-19 vaccination centres experiencing shortage of vaccine.

This comes after the President Uhuru Kenyatta led the country in getting the vaccine with his cabinet secretaries.

Easter Holiday

As we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, it’s high time to thank God for keeping us safe and maintaining our good health during this time of pandemic.

Some have lost their loved ones to coronavirus. Others have been drained out of their resources due to high cost of treatment. May God remember all those infected and affected. May He comfort them and strengthen their faith in Him.

Let’s not forget that God knew us before we were formed in our mother’s womb. He promises never to leave us alone. He was with the children of Israel when they reached the red sea. Could they have imagined that the water would give the way? But God did it….and there was a way through!

They reached the wilderness where there was no sign of water to quench their thirst…God provided away out!

Those who were dead and people had lost hope…He made them live again! And the sick…..He restored their health!

He gave hope to the hopeless. No matter what we are going through, God will make a way… it may be dark in the night, but the morning is coming and the sun will shine once again!

Just hold on!

Happy Easter!

Kenya becomes the second country in Africa to launch Safaricom 5G Network

Mobile network operator Safaricom has launched a 5G network in Kenya, making it the second country in Africa to roll out the technology. The company has started the rollout in four towns, and expects to expand it to nine over the next year.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa described last week launch as “a major milestone for the country.”  The telco is implementing the project using technology from the Finnish company Nokia and the Chinese company Huawei

MTN and Vodacom launched 5G in South Africa last year. Telecommunications companies in five other African countries—Gabon, Lesotho, Nigeria, Uganda, Egypt and Morocco—are conducting internal trials for 5G, meaning it’s not yet available for public use.

While the new development makes Kenyans early adopters of 5G in Africa, questions remain over investor and market readiness for mass use of the technology across the continent. As a result, widespread adoption of 5G in the region, while a promising prospect, may be far-off.

Fifth generation standard

5G is the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks. It can also support up to 1 million connected devices per square kilometer, compared to up to 100,000 for 4G.

Safaricom’s introduction of the technology in Kenya is “an important step in Africa’s 5G journey,” says Kenechi Okeleke, the lead author of a 2019 report on 5G in sub-Saharan Africa by GSMA, an organization representing mobile network operators worldwide . “This move will draw a lot of attention to the potential of 5G in the region and the benefits it can bring to society,” he tells Quartz.

The initial focus will be on how 5G will enhance broadband connectivity for Safaricom, says Okeleke, director at GSMA’s research arm, GSMA Intelligence. However, he adds, given the company’s track record in tech innovation, many observers will be on the lookout for potential new use cases that Safaricom could develop for Africa’s unique challenges and customer needs.

Fiber optic-like connectivity

5G’s faster speeds bring fiber optic-like connectivity to homes—a broadband connection that can reach speeds of up to 940 megabits per second. This would be a game changer for African businesses and schools that do not have access to fiber-optic internet, especially in a post-Covid-19 world where activities including work, learning, and entertainment are increasingly happening online, Okeleke says.

The technology could enable new and existing technologies such as artificial intelligence and the internet of things—the interconnection via the internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects—to have a transformative impact on business processes, helping drive productivity and efficiency, Okeleke says. This has the potential to spark innovative solutions, particularly in extractive sectors such as mining and oil and gas, he adds, and help financial services and logistics sectors in the continent.

Low penetration

Currently, only 3% of the world’s mobile phone connections are on 5G (Asia is in the lead, with 5% of mobile connections on 5G). But GSMA Intelligence estimates that by 2025, 5G will likely to cover a third of the world’s population.

It will take some time for Africa to catch up. Currently, around 51% of Africa’s mobile phone connections are on 3G, and GSMA Intelligence believes that it will remain dominant, with 5G connections making up only 3% of total mobile connections in Africa by 2025. South Africa’s 5G connections account for less than 1% currently.

Investor and market and readiness

Despite the expected growth and excitement over the potential of 5G in Africa, there are concerns about investor and market readiness for the technology. The investment outlay for 5G is very high for mobile phone networks, Okeleke says. Phones that can connect to 5G are also very expensive for consumers.

Uptake of 5G may also be slow, since 4G is enough to meet people’s data needs for day-to-day use. AI and VR, the strongest use cases for 5G because of the speed and lower latency it offer, aren’t yet common on the continent.

Still, Okeleke expects the need for 5G will grow quickly. “As these things become more commonplace in the region, then we are likely to see that stronger demand for 5G services in a way that saw that strong demand for 2G services in the early 2000s,” Okeleke says. “And it is that demand for 5G services that will improve the economics of investments into 5G networks.”

Candidates and teachers found participating in exam cheating ( KCSE)

It is one week since the Kenya Certificate Secondary Examinations started. The Ministry of Education had announced that any irregularities in the exam will be punishable.

In spite of this announcement, some candidates and businessmen have colluded to find ways to leak the papers. Students have been found with phones in the exam rooms which may have been used to cheat.

Some of the teachers who invigilate the exam have too forgotten their sense of integrity. They were caught helping the candidates in cheating. They were arrested and investigation in on going.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, has emphasized that the exam papers have not leaked and they won’t. He urged the citizens to be careful of some criminals who are taking advantage of the situation and sell fake papers.

Why it is difficult for some learners in Kenya to take online classes- Ciscasquapro

The directives of the lockdown experienced in most of the countries in the world has interfered with the school calendar. To pasue Education, this has made a good number of students find refuge in online classes by using platforms such as zoom , Google classroom and Google meet this, for more visit Google Support

Learners taking an online class.

However this has not been always easy as there are a lot of challenges that learners go through during their online lessons. Some of these challenges are:

  • Lack of internet connection in rural areas.
  • Some parents are not able to meet the extra expenses that come with internet such as paying for home fibre network or buying of bundles.
  • There is disruption when lessons are going on such as; poor internet signals, blackouts due to power failure or lack of a quiet place as classes takes place in the houses where other members are going on with their duties causing background noise and interfering with the learners concentration.
  • Computer illiteracy. Using computers for online classes needs one to have some skills. While this should be the case, some learners face some challenges when connecting to class or when needed to follow the lesson smoothly.
  • Long hours on the screen. When learners are attending their classes, they are expected to be glued to the screen for long hours as all lessons are being taught through computers. If not using a computer, the students is forced to use a mobile phone which makes them struggle a lot reading and navigating to different pages as they take notes from the teacher. In any way, online lessons are causing stress and most of students who were not used to this style of learning have complained of headache and eye problems.
  • They are not able to participate fully like in a normal class. Audio and connection issues contribute to this.
  • The teacher might not be able to cater for slow learners. After online class, the learner has no other chance to engage with the teacher for the concept that was not well understood.
  • Ignorance of some of the parents who don’t care whether the child is learning or not. Technology to them is a bother and should not interfere with their busy schedule. In such a scenario, the learner is disadvantaged.
  • Cyber bullying. Some people are out there to harass the learners as they access internet. Sometimes it’s difficult for the learner to suspect such bully’s hence find themselves in problems.

These challenges are making life difficult to both the child and the parents. See also 5 reasons why parent cannot stay with their children It seems that these challenges are not leaving us soon. Follow me as I try to solve this puzzle in my next post. For more, read: https://ciscasquapro.com/education/ .. kindly follow and leave your opinion as you comment.

Effects of lockdown in Nairobi, Kiambu, kajiado, Machakos and Nakuru counties|Ciscasquapro

After President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the lockdown of counties infected with the coronavirus, it found many unaware.

Most people have decided to rush to their destinations by midnight. This has caused congestion at bus stations contributing to hike of the fare. Most of the passengers are complaining that they were not prepared for the amount they are being charged and so causing a lot of inconveniences.

Business will also be affected. Some like hotels and bars have been advised to work on strict instructions.

Some learning institutions have been ordered to close until farther notice

To add insult to injury, high shortage of vehicles has come up. It is like morning will find some people still on the road.

It is true to say ” No pain no gain.” And nothing comes on a silver platter.

Sunday Weather Forecast: Nairobi, Kenya.

Of late we have been experiencing a very unpredictable weather. Like today is too hot. Sometimes days become too hot and all of a sudden changes to cold weather. Heavy fog is being experience along the highway causing accidents due to poor vision. Not even the weather man gets it right.

In February, heavy rains came from nowhere. It brought havoc in the country. As we were preparing to get used, the dry weather appeared.

It seems seasons have really changed. Sometimes back, we were able to tell exact dates when the rain would fall without the help of weather forecast department.

Now we are in late March. We are expecting long rains as people have already prepared their land for planting season.

We have to adapt this kind of change. Now we have to leave the house having all the necessities: umbrella for the rains, heavy sweater for the cold and light clothes too, incase the weather becomes unbearably hot. Not forgetting to put in mind the type of the shoes. Floods can appear any time.

Enjoy you day!

Churches closed in kenya due to a surge of Covid-19 infections

Oops! We are in it once again! Last year, the government banned all gatherings including the churches. After a long period we were happy to go back to our worship places.

The country has been experiencing increase in Covid-19 infections where the number of people infected is increasing day by day. This has made the President to revert the rules.

Curfew hours have been increased. All gathering have been stopped. Hotels and bars closed. This did not spare the churches. And so we are at home catching live events from the social media…thanks to internet!

Hi, welcome to this platform. Did you miss the previous parts? Get them here.

“Come here my baby.” Her mother said to her holding her hand and together they sat in a couch. Then she continued, “Liznet, my baby, sometimes life isn’t the way you see it. There is a lot hidden from your eyes and you will only discover it when you get a bit older. I have heard you clearly and I understand your sentiments.” Liznet was listening keenly as her mother sweetly spoke to her.

“You enjoy seeing birds soaring in the sky. Have you ever asked yourself where they shelter from heavy rains and storms? With you, you get inside the house and cover yourself tightly. If you would be able to talk to those birds, they also have a story to tell. They would complain that people are hash to them, cry out because of challenges from bad weather, they also get sick and other many bad things do happen to them.” She looked at her daughter who was nodding her head in agreement with the mother.

Then she went on, “When God created human beings, according to what The Bible says, they were wonderfully and fearfully made. He took ample time to make sure He made the best human being. Then, he was given permission to control all the other animals.” She took a Bible Story Book and showed her some pictures.

” You see all this animals, human being is more special. He was given a different mind and authority over them.” She closed the book and continued. ” In life, there are challenges, but these challenges are meant to help us learn and to appreciate what God has done to us. They also make us stronger and help us appreciate other people’s lives. No matter all the bad things you see, God will always protect you. He want you to grow and become a great person in future. We should always thank God for giving us this wonderful life. Always remember mom will always take good care of you no matter what.” She hugged her daughter tightly and whispered,” I love you so much baby.” “Thanks mom, now I know am better than those birds! Kenya Secondary Schools Candidates start their National Examinations (KCSE)

After Four years, the students are ready to seat for their final examinations which will determine whether to proceed to universities or colleges.

The students have been going through hard times now that the pandemic has been here for about a year. Some have been affected mentally and emotionally making the students feel as if they are not ready for the exam.

The government has done all what it takes to cushion them. This is by providing counselors in schools who talk to the affected learners. Moreover, the teachers have been trained to handle learners with such problems.

Every learner is working extra hard to see that he or she pass their examinations.

We wish them success in their exams.

Best way to treat cold and flu with ginger, garlic, tumeric and lemon

Ginger, garlic, tumeric and lemon are easily available in our markets. I didn’t know how these products were powerful until the time I used them.

We may have ignored their importance but they stand to offer great help to our bodies. I am one of those people who used to hate the garlic smell not to mention the tumeric taste.

Last week, I was suffering from cold and flu. At first, I was shocked as this is one of the covid 19 symptoms. You can imagine how scared I was. I decided to take it easy and tried to manage it by myself and then I would visit the doctor later if it didn’t work. I went fetching for the products in the nearby market.

I then prepared them and mixing everything except lemon which I added after the boiling was done. Before I could allow the mixture to cool down, I steamed myself with the hot vapour. After some minutes, I sieved the mixture and added some honey to taste.

After three days, I was free from the cold and flu! I couldn’t believe it. I felt so relieved and happy. My medicine was just a stone throw and at the same time I spent less for my treatment.

By writing this, I don’t advocate for not visiting the doctor when you feel unwell, but you can as well give it a shot.

Have you ever experienced such? Will be happy to hear how you managed it without visiting the doctor. Would you like to read other posts? Be free to get them here.

Kenya’s Covid-19 Third Wave

When coronavirus knocked, we thought it was just for sometime. This was never to be. In kenya we are now experiencing the third wave which seems to be more dangerous. Children are back home for a long holiday. This makes the parents even more worried.

Most of the hospitals are full to capacity for new admissions and when one gets lucky, they are quoting very high admission fee leaving most of the citizens helpless.

Number of people infected with the virus has really increased. People, on the other hand have ignored following the Covid-19 protocals. We are worried how things will end.

Will the vaccine help? We have to wait and see….is the virus still a thorn in the flesh where you come from?… Kindly share how you are working on mitigation……I will appreciate reading it in your comment.

Tanzanians mourn former president, John Pombe Magufuli

You may say that the former Tanzania’s president was a rough person without mercy, but Tanzanians will tell you a different story. Whatever he did was for the normal Tanzanian citizen. He had stood firm on his decision making. He didn’t care whether to lose friends or not. All what he cared for was the Tanzanians. He will be missed by many.
