Today we mark the end of our Easter Holiday. For those who had travelled, remember to come back. Tomorrow is a working day. For those who were under lockdown, I hope you enjoyed your indoor Easter. It is good sometimes to do things differently.
After President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the lockdown of counties infected with the coronavirus, it found many unaware.
Most people have decided to rush to their destinations by midnight. This has caused congestion at bus stations contributing to hike of the fare. Most of the passengers are complaining that they were not prepared for the amount they are being charged and so causing a lot of inconveniences.
Business will also be affected. Some like hotels and bars have been advised to work on strict instructions.
Due to complains raised by kenyans on sudden lockdownnof some counties, the government has give a grace period. They are given twenty four hours to have travelled to their destinations. Kenyan citizens have welcomed the move. However, some feel that the decisions were hurriedly made.
Learning institutions have been closed down. The question is, how will the students move from the areas that have been locked down to their homes which are in different parts of the country? Some feel he could have given them time to reach home before locking down the areas.
Just yesterday, President Uhuru Kenyatta led the country in getting vaccinated against Covid-19. Previously, citizens had complained that the jab may not be safe because the leaders were not taking it.
Now that they acted as role model, people have come out in large number to receive the jab. Infact, some centers fell short of the vaccine. The fear is no more!…good leaders lead by example!

Ginger, garlic, tumeric and lemon are easily available in our markets. I didn’t know how these products were powerful until the time I used them.
We may have ignored their importance but they stand to offer great help to our bodies. I am one of those people who used to hate the garlic smell not to mention the tumeric taste.
Last week, I was suffering from cold and flu. At first, I was shocked as this is one of the covid 19 symptoms. You can imagine how scared I was. I decided to take it easy and tried to manage it by myself and then I would visit the doctor later if it didn’t work. I went fetching for the products in the nearby market.
I then prepared them and mixing everything except lemon which I added after the boiling was done. Before I could allow the mixture to cool down, I steamed myself with the hot vapour. After some minutes, I sieved the mixture and added some honey to taste.
After three days, I was free from the cold and flu! I couldn’t believe it. I felt so relieved and happy. My medicine was just a stone throw and at the same time I spent less for my treatment.
By writing this, I don’t advocate for not visiting the doctor when you feel unwell, but you can as well give it a shot.
Have you ever experienced such? Will be happy to hear how you managed it without visiting the doctor. Would you like to read other posts? Be free to get them here.
When coronavirus knocked, we thought it was just for sometime. This was never to be. In kenya we are now experiencing the third wave which seems to be more dangerous. Children are back home for a long holiday. This makes the parents even more worried.
Most of the hospitals are full to capacity for new admissions and when one gets lucky, they are quoting very high admission fee leaving most of the citizens helpless.
Number of people infected with the virus has really increased. People, on the other hand have ignored following the Covid-19 protocals. We are worried how things will end.
Will the vaccine help? We have to wait and see….is the virus still a thorn in the flesh where you come from?… Kindly share how you are working on mitigation……I will appreciate reading it in your comment.
The kenya Primary National Examinations are set to start on 22 March. 19th marks the rehearsal day whereby the learners are reminded some do’s and dont’s. Teachers make sure that every learner is well prepared to seat for the exam.
The learners have been preparing for 8 years and now it’s time to reap what they sow. Some schools which didn’t survive the pandemic closed down. This led to transfer of learners to other schools which survived the Covid-19 storm.
The exams are coming a times when some of the learners are going through difficult time. Some have lost their loved ones to Covid-19 while others have been affected economically. This may affect the outcome but not much can be done to mitigate the situation.
We wish them success as well as a safe time! See how to get to your destiny no matter what.

The former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who is also the ODM party leader had visited the hospital feeling unwell. He complained of fatigue. He was later diagnosed with coronavirus. This happened after he attended several meetings in Mombasa County.
His doctor says that he is responding well to treatment. This is according to report received from media stations. We wish him quick recovery. Remember to leave a comment to wish him well.
The CS has broadly expressed his fear on the rise of the number of people suffering from coronavirus. He declares that the country is experiencing the third wave of the pandemic which can be more dangerous than the previous.
He pleads with all citizens to be extra careful and follow the regulations as given by Ministry of Health.
The long awaited coronavirus vaccine is already here. As per my previous post, teachers and health workers will be in forefront to receive the vaccine. The process of vaccination has already kicked off.
The vaccine has been taken to a number of counties through out the country. Some people still feel that the vaccine is not safe while others see it as a blessing in disguise.
As stated by the Health Cabinet Secretary, the country is going through the third wave of the virus. He stated that, from the previous experience, this one seems to be tougher than before. The numbers have started rising raising a red flag and so he advised the citizens to be a bit careful and keep to the covid-19 regulations.
This has been the slogan of the day in kenya whether you are supporting it or not. There is always something one can utter on BBI. BBI came as a result of the handshake between President Uhuru and former Prime Minister Raila.
The issue has raised a lot of questions than answers. Some people are finding it strange to use alleged 14 billion during this difficult time in the midst of coronavirus hiccups. Others feel that the change of constitution should come first no matter what.
This has brought a tag of war among the citizens. The politicians are taking the advantage of BBI to go round the country pleading with people to support their decision.
It is still not sure whether the BBI will go through or not. We are yet to see. But one thing people should understand is that, as much as they are campaigning for BBI or not, they should adhere to covid-19 protocols. The large gatherings seen show openly that people have forgotten that corona virus is still with us. Although the vaccine is here, we should be careful.
The schools in kenya reopened on 4th January after a break of nine month. Learners have been having a hard time coping with the new normal of putting on the masks and maintaining social distance.
Some of the learners were affected by the pandemic in one way or the other. Not all learners were able to engage in online classes and so almost forgot everything they were taught before the coronavirus pandemic. Nine months is not a short without going through what one had covered previously.
Coming back to school, the learners having been going through mental challenges and some have been seen suffering from stress. This has caused a great harm to school. It has also been noted that, the long holiday exposed the learners to bad behaviours such as use of drugs. Others have found it difficult to adjust to the life of rules and regulations as they were used to live a life of freedom. Recently, a boy killed a teacher just because of being asked why he was late for classes.
The uncertainty and anxiety that is seen in schools indicates the kind of harm the pandemic has caused not only to economy but also to morals and values of our children. Learners have been burning schools living the parents to suffer more as they pay for the loses.
It’s unfortunate that this comes just a month to national exams. It seems that they feel they are not prepared enough to seat for their final year examinations.
Teachers have been advised of the ministry of education to be vigilant and note any form of distress from the learners. They are directed to give the child concerned the support he or she need. Where there is a need for a counselor, teachers should work with speed to help the child.
How are the learners coping with the new normal in your area? I would love to have a chat with you. Tell me more. You can also see other posts here.

Being said that the teachers and health workers will be among the first to be given the coronavirus vaccine, it has attracted mixed reaction from different people. Though voluntary, this haven’t changed other people’s thought on it causing more complications on ones health, such as mental health while some see it as the best way to prevent ourselves from the deadly virus.

COVID-19 puts adolescents at greater risk of acquiring or spreading HIV.
By Maniza Zaman, UNICEF Representative to Kenya, and UNAIDS Country Director Medhin Tsehaiu

This article first appeared in The Nation on November 29, 2020.
For young people in Kenya, the risks of COVID-19 stretch way beyond the effects of the virus itself. We believe that COVID-19 and the containment measures could be contributing to new spikes in adolescent HIV as evidenced by reduced access to essential HIV prevention services and along with other unintended consequences such as unintended pregnancy and sexual and gender-based violence.
With schools fully or partially closed, many children have been away from the protective environment of school for months. Families are facing financial hardship, food insecurity, stress and uncertainty. This creates the conditions for an increase in abuse, sexual violence in homes and communities and in transactional sex, which can lead to an increase in sexually transmitted infections including HIV and unintended pregnancies among adolescents. We can already see early signs of this – national helplines have reported a tenfold increase in reports on violence against girls and women since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak. A third of all crimes reported in the first month after the COVID-19 outbreak in Kenya were related to sexual violence.
UNICEF and UNAIDS are particularly concerned about the most vulnerable children in areas of Kenya that already have the highest rates of HIV. For example, in Homa Bay County, youth aged 15-24 contribute 13 per cent of the total number of HIV infections amongst 15-49-year olds in the County. The picture in other counties in the western and lake basin region is similar.
The consequences of a further rise in HIV could be wide-ranging. As well as causing serious health problems, HIV can lead to devastating emotional issues due to stigma and discrimination. And in a vicious circle, while COVID-19 puts adolescents at greater risk of acquiring or spreading HIV, people living with HIV are also at greater risk of severe COVID-19 infections that can lead to death, especially those who do not take medication regularly.
As the global AIDS epidemic continues, we need to act. Homa Bay County Government has commissioned research, carried out by LVCT Health and the Overseas Development Institute supported by UNICEF, to analyse the root causes of adolescent HIV, as well as teenage pregnancies. The findings of ‘Unintended pregnancies and HIV among adolescents and young people: A situation analysis of Homa Bay’, offer important local, regional and country-wide lessons.
Firstly, gender inequality is a major driver of HIV infections in adolescents. Girls often have little control in relationships or in the use of condoms and other forms of contraception. They may conduct transactional sex to secure food for their families. The report also highlights limited access to adolescent HIV services and inadequate quality comprehensive sexuality education in schools. Lastly, the report finds that vulnerable young people get caught up in risky behaviours and cultural practices such as ‘disco matanga’, that put them at risk of sexual exploitation, abuse and of acquiring HIV.
At this critical time, we must move quickly to address these issues in Homa Bay and nationwide. We need to see improved and budgeted programming, focusing on addressing harmful gender norms, as well as find channels to provide culturally and age-appropriate sexual reproductive health education for those in school and out-of-school. Increased support and training opportunities are also needed to give vulnerable girls alternatives to avoid early pregnancy and early marriage. And sensitization and positive engagement of their peers, the young boys, is also key to address the situation.
Finally, the health system can do more to be responsive to adolescents and young people through the provision of comprehensive services both at facility and community level. In sum, a multifaceted approach that stays true to the right to information and voice, tailored quality services and innovative social safety nets will be key in supporting vulnerable young women.
Extraordinary change is possible when we work together. Since 2013, there has been a 66 per cent reduction in the rate of new HIV infections among 10 to 19-year-olds in Kenya, as the country followed an ambitious path to reduce new HIV infections to zero by 2030. During this period, Kenya has also led Africa in the rollout of pre-exposure prophylaxis, HIV self-testing and voluntary male medical circumcision.
Young people also need hope and opportunities to create a better future. This is why the UN is investing in expanding horizons for young people, as a key partner with the Government in the Generation Unlimited partnership. Through a multitude of programmes, the partnership aims to expand opportunities in education, training and employment for the young people in Kenya.
As part of the UN family in Kenya, UNICEF and UNAIDS will continue to work with the Government, partners and importantly adolescents themselves to accelerate steps and innovate to reduce HIV rates amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kenya’s adolescents are a vital national resource. Yet they currently face multiple threats to their health and wellbeing. Let us join hands in a deliberate effort to listen, understand and engage adolescents and young people in propelling a youth-centred response that offers them the best chance in life.

What seemed like it will never come to be in month of January is now here with us. Yes! Tomorrow is Christmas! How are you ushering it? I believe by now we are all set on how to celebrate our Christmas Holidays.
However, some challenges though. A lot of people traveling to different parts of the country causing congestion at bus station making it very difficult for people to maintain social distance as to covid 19 guidelines.
True to say that the transport business is really booming now that they don’t wait for people to board. People started booking earlier enough and for those who didn’t, they are finding it tough. Sometimes they are forced to postpone their journey due to lack of means of transport.
For those having personal means, they are not spared either. Traffic jam has become a nuisance along the highways. This has been brought by a large number traveling using their means while others hire cars for Christmas Holidays.
The SGR trains are already fully booked. The train to Nanyuki from Nairobi has been forced to reschedule its program to meet the demand of a high number of passengers.
Supermarkets and malls are overcrowded as people struggle to get their best for Christmas. Christmas trees and Christmas lights business taking the frontline. People are seen shopping luxuriously as this is not a daily way of doing it. Such kind of shopping mostly comes once in a year to most of the people and so is something to be celebrated for.
For those who will be slaughtering, the animal is just within the compound waiting for the D-Day. Yeah, waiting to throw a party!

That’s how things are here. I thought coronavirus pandemic would hinder the festive mood, but people are determined to visit their loved ones.
What about at your place? How are people ushering the Christmas?

I have noted with a lot of concern on how people adhere to the pandemic guidelines. People have been seen campaigning without maintaining social distance in Countries and counties which have held elections. Others don’t put on mask and if they do, they hang it on the chin.
My question is, why do rules seem to be taken for granted by both the citizens and the leaders when it comes to politics meetings? The leaders keep reminding us about the precautions yet to them, it seems that it is easier said than done.
If this leaders get infected with the coronavirus, not only are they able of visit the best hospitals but also they have enough money that may be needed for the treatment. But what about the normal person attending those rallies, if the worst happen, nobody will remember him. The vaccine may not get you alive.
Today being the World AIDS’ Day, it is important to love the AIDS victims and stop the stigma that comes with the HIV especially now that the coronavirus can be a challenge to them. Let’s fight the monster together.
The days are really flying. Just the other day we celebrated Christmas holidays. It is December again. Though we have gone through hard times due to coronavirus, we thank God for the far He has taken as through.
As we join the month full of festivities, let’s not forget that the month is quite different from others. Due to the pandemic, we might not enjoy the way we used to. Let’s not forget to adhere to regulations given by ministry of health to make sure we have protected each other from the deadly virus.
May all of us have a month full of happiness. Happy New Month!
The church was one of many places that was closed due to corona virus pandemic. After sometimes, it was shocking seeing bars opening before the church. With influence of alcohol, the people could not adhere to covid 19 regulations. But this did not stop them from opening.
There was no register as they entered the bars or the markets which was mandatory in the church. When the church opened, there were so many restrictions compared to other places. Was this a spiritual war?
Could covid 19 be a spiritual war fighting the church? Markets are operating as usual. Political gathering are going on as if nothing is happening. But dare to call for a spiritual gathering and it will be you are infringing the health rights of the people.
Merry go round going on as usual. Table banking the same, but fellowship will spread the virus! Don’t you see as if there is more than meet the eye in this?
Is the devil trying to fight the church or is it God punishing the church? Somebody help me understand why only in church gatherings that the coronavirus will spread more! As we pass wishes of a blessed Sunday, most of us are just at home.
Children are going to school. Practising social distance has not been possible but they are still in operation. All other business working as normal but we cannot still meet as church members and discuss issues affecting the church.
All in all, let’s be vigilant, the enemy comes to steal, to destroy and to kill.
We are putting too much attention to coronavirus patients as if there were no other deadly diseases.
One is rushed to hospital for pneumonia complications and what you hear is, ” You have to wait for 24hours for covid-19 results to come out.” Before the 24hours are over, we loose our loved ones just in the name of waiting for the results.
Cancer is another disease that is taking those we love without mercy. But all the attention has been taken to covid.
Just the other day, a man had an accident and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The doctors said they cannot attend to him before he was tested for covid. Seriously, a man who needed emergency care to wait for 24 hours? This isn’t right at all. After some hours, he was no more.
It is my prayer that the doctors, nurses and those in health care should come up with ways to mitigate death of patients whose lives could have been saved if only they were given the right attention at the right time.
Most people are dying not because of covid 19 but of other deadly diseases that needed more attention.
How can a person who has been stabbed wait to be tested coronavirus when the knife is still in his body. To me this is really inhuman.
I understand strongly that we need to care for our nurses and doctors and I appreciate the effort they are putting in, but let us not forget there other more deadly situations than just having the coronavirus!
The coronavirus vaccine has attracted mixed reaction from different people. Others think it causes more complications such as mental health while some see it as the best way to prevent ourselves from the deadly virus.
I would love to get your view on this? What do you think? Let’s chat as you leave a comment. More insights here.
The world was full of peace and happiness until the monster knocked our doors.
We hesitated opening, but the monster kept knocking.
It knocked so loud that everyone in the house was scared to death.
We tried to lock our doors with everything we could find. But it was all in vain.
Finally the monster was in with a bang. Threatened everybody. Took our living rooms, our kitchens and did not dare to spare our bedrooms.
There was nowhere to hide. And as if that was not enough, it took away our loved ones.
Where did you come from? You make our eyes cry every day. Our hearts are full of sadness and we are mourning.
When will you live us? You don’t spare even the kids. Men and women you slay. The rich and the poor you strike. When will you stop this!
We are tied of your attacks. We cannot take it anymore. We have tried all what we can, but you are too dangerous for us to handle.
Oh God! save us from this monster. We have become helpless. We cannot do it alone. We have tried all what we can, but the monster is too powerful for us to fight.
Oh Monster! Oh Covid 19! Oh Coronavirus! Oh pandemic! Please live us in peace.
