Why it is difficult for some learners in Kenya to take online classes- Ciscasquapro

The directives of the lockdown experienced in most of the countries in the world has interfered with the school calendar. To pasue Education, this has made a good number of students find refuge in online classes by using platforms such as zoom , Google classroom and Google meet this, for more visit Google Support

Learners taking an online class.

However this has not been always easy as there are a lot of challenges that learners go through during their online lessons. Some of these challenges are:

  • Lack of internet connection in rural areas.
  • Some parents are not able to meet the extra expenses that come with internet such as paying for home fibre network or buying of bundles.
  • There is disruption when lessons are going on such as; poor internet signals, blackouts due to power failure or lack of a quiet place as classes takes place in the houses where other members are going on with their duties causing background noise and interfering with the learners concentration.
  • Computer illiteracy. Using computers for online classes needs one to have some skills. While this should be the case, some learners face some challenges when connecting to class or when needed to follow the lesson smoothly.
  • Long hours on the screen. When learners are attending their classes, they are expected to be glued to the screen for long hours as all lessons are being taught through computers. If not using a computer, the students is forced to use a mobile phone which makes them struggle a lot reading and navigating to different pages as they take notes from the teacher. In any way, online lessons are causing stress and most of students who were not used to this style of learning have complained of headache and eye problems.
  • They are not able to participate fully like in a normal class. Audio and connection issues contribute to this.
  • The teacher might not be able to cater for slow learners. After online class, the learner has no other chance to engage with the teacher for the concept that was not well understood.
  • Ignorance of some of the parents who don’t care whether the child is learning or not. Technology to them is a bother and should not interfere with their busy schedule. In such a scenario, the learner is disadvantaged.
  • Cyber bullying. Some people are out there to harass the learners as they access internet. Sometimes it’s difficult for the learner to suspect such bully’s hence find themselves in problems.

These challenges are making life difficult to both the child and the parents. See also 5 reasons why parent cannot stay with their children It seems that these challenges are not leaving us soon. Online classes are back: Schools closed

It’s one week since the closure of schools. Our teenagers must be kept busy to make better use of the energy they have. For those in town, there is no land to till unlike the country side teenagers. No forest to send them to look after cattle. Lockdown locks them just inside the house. It is high time they get enrolled in online classes.

What is causing unrest in kenyan schools

The schools in kenya reopened on 4th January after a break of nine month. Learners have been having a hard time coping with the new normal of putting on the masks and maintaining social distance.

Some of the learners were affected by the pandemic in one way or the other. Not all learners were able to engage in online classes and so almost forgot everything they were taught before the coronavirus pandemic. Nine months is not a short without going through what one had covered previously.

Coming back to school, the learners having been going through mental challenges and some have been seen suffering from stress. This has caused a great harm to school. It has also been noted that, the long holiday exposed the learners to bad behaviours such as use of drugs. Others have found it difficult to adjust to the life of rules and regulations as they were used to live a life of freedom. Recently, a boy killed a teacher just because of being asked why he was late for classes.

The uncertainty and anxiety that is seen in schools indicates the kind of harm the pandemic has caused not only to economy but also to morals and values of our children. Learners have been burning schools living the parents to suffer more as they pay for the loses.

It’s unfortunate that this comes just a month to national exams. It seems that they feel they are not prepared enough to seat for their final year examinations.

Teachers have been advised of the ministry of education to be vigilant and note any form of distress from the learners. They are directed to give the child concerned the support he or she need. Where there is a need for a counselor, teachers should work with speed to help the child.

How are the learners coping with the new normal in your area? I would love to have a chat with you. Tell me more. You can also see other posts here.

What happens after sitting for long hours – Ciscasquapro

Have you ever experienced the side effects of sitting for a long time? The novel coronavirus has forced most of us to work from home. Those who are taking courses are too forced to do it online.

Teachers teaching online are forced to sit for a long time contrary to what they are used to. Student may change the sitting position in a normal class but for online classes, same position is maintained.

Sitting for long hours at the same position has come with some problems.

There is an increase of backache to the victims. Some have experienced swelling of feet. Others feel a lot of fatigue from sitting at the same position for long. Sitting glued to the screen causes headaches and eye problems.

Then, what should we do to prevent these problems? Don’t mind, there is a way out.

  • Give yourself some short breaks.
  • Change the sitting position after sometimes.
  • Do some exercises as you are seated such as moving of the legs, hands and shoulders.
  • Move the eyes away from the screen for some time. Focus at a distance before you come back to the screen.
  • Exercise before you start your day and if possible after you are done with the busy day.

Next time you need to sit for long, take note of the above.

Do you have other experience you can add to the list? Feel free to put it done as a comment below.
